How to Plan a Custom Software Project
A practical framework for structuring a custom software investment before development begins.
Define the business outcome first
Start with the business result that should change, not a feature list. Choose an observable outcome such as cycle time, error rate, capacity, or task completion.
A clear success measure makes scope decisions easier and helps remove unnecessary features early.
Map the critical journey and boundaries
Identify the smallest end-to-end value flow the first release must support. Make roles, data sources, approvals, and external dependencies visible.
Uncertain integrations and data migration often create schedule risk, so validate them during discovery.
Break delivery into measurable increments
Validate working increments in short cycles instead of waiting through a long invisible build. Give each increment acceptance criteria, tests, and a decision owner.
Clarify maintenance, security updates, observability, and backup responsibilities before delivery starts.
